HOT WEEKEND FOR LANE'S END STALLIONS

The temperatures over the weekend were almost as hot as Lane’s End sires Union Rags, Twirling Candy, and Liam’s Map, all of which had big winners over the past few days.

Catalina Cruiser, a five-year-old by Union Rags, defended his title in the G2 San Diego H. at Del Mar to notch his fourth graded stakes victory. Catalina Cruiser now boasts a career record of 7-6-0-0 with $571,100 in earnings. The John Sadler-trainee is being considered for a start in Del Mar’s G1 Pacific Classic later this summer.

TWIRLING CANDY COLT WINS DEBUT AT DEL MAR

COLLUSION ILLUSION (c, 2, Twirling Candy–Natalie Grace, by First Dude), a $50,000 Keeneland September Yearling who flourished into a $300,000 OBS April juvenile off a :10 flat breeze, was given a 5-1 chance following a pair of sharp morning works, including the most recent going four panels in :48.00 (4/35) July 16. The Florida-bred was far back in the early going as favored Bronn (Conveyance) and Disco Ball (Orb) duked it out through fractions of 22:27 and :46.08.

BANDUA SETS COURSE RECORD ON MILLION PREVIEW DAY

STALLIONS

Third in the Secretariat Stakes (G1T) in August, Calumet Farm's Bandua returned to Arlington International Racecourse July 13 and captured the $150,000 Arlington Handicap (G3T), his first stakes victory, in course-record time.

The victory was the first of two stakes wins for jockey Adam Beschizza on Million Preview Day, which offered three local preps for next month's grade 1 action.

Staying was the order of the day in Thursday’s G3 Bahrain Trophy and Earle Mack and Team Valor LLC’s Spanish Mission (Noble Mission {GB}) had no deficit in that regard as he powered to an emphatic success in course-record time for the 13 furlongs. Having lost out by a neck to Private Secretary (GB) (Kingman {GB}) when runner-up in the Listed Cocked Hat S. over an extended 11 furlongs at Goodwood May 24, the 13-2 shot traveled comfortably with two behind early as the field ignored the runaway Severance (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}).

HONOR CODE OFF THE MARK AT LAUREL

NIGHT CODE (c, 2, Honor Code–Unenchantedevening, by Unbridled’s Song) was dispatched as the 3-5 favorite for his career debut Thursday at Laurel and despite racing as greenly as his number five saddle towel, belied his inexperience to become the first winner for his freshman sire (by A.P. Indy) in the process. Part of a four-pronged battle for the lead in the run into the turn, the attractive dark bay settled outside fellow firster Fishman (Malibu Moon) and that duo raced heads apart on the bend.
