SIRE POWER: STALLION MANAGER SELLERS KEEPS LANE'S END SHED ON TASK

Just past 7:30 a.m. on an early March morning, with the sun beginning to rise over the paddocks east of Lane’s End, stallion manager Billy Sellers stands outside the majestic operation’s breeding shed, upbeat and bright as the weather. He’s wearing a safety vest over a tan jumpsuit and blue surgical gloves with plastic extensions that run up to his elbows. He is awaiting the first stallion to come to work for the 8 a.m. breeding session, the first of three sessions he’ll oversee on this day.

Only nine sires since 1996 have scored 9/9 on this scale, of which eight have become very successful sires. West Coast joins an elite group including A.P. Stakes races across the country Feb. 15 provided one of the clearest examples of how versatile Lane's End Farm's The Factor has been as a sire. 

The 12-year-old son of War Front was represented by a graded stakes winner going two-turns on the grass at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots and a dirt sprinter at Laurel Park. In addition, the sire had a winner in a one-mile, non-black-type stakes on the main track at Turf Paradise.

A little momentum heading into the breeding season never hurts, and Connect got just that on Monday with a strong opening session at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Winter Mixed Sale.

The resident of Lane's End had two first-crop yearlings go through the ring on Monday, and their hammer prices accounted for the top two spots among rookie stallions, two of the day's seven highest prices for yearlings, and perhaps most importantly, the highest-priced yearling of the session.

FIRST FOAL BY CHAMPION ACCELERATE HAS ARRIVED

The first foal by the five-time Grade I-winning Champion Accelerate has hit the ground. The colt was born January 21 in Lexington, Kentucky. This is the first foal out of the Congrats mare, Sweet Congrats, who hails from the family of Woodbine Oaks victress Dixie Moon, as well as stakes winners Guy Caballero and Candybedandy.

“We’re very excited about him, he’s a very strong, good-bodied foal very much like his sire,” said Bob McCann. “We love Accelerate. A five-time Grade 1 winner, $380,000 yearling and is great value at $20,000.”

QUALITY ROAD LEADS NATION BY GRADE 1 WINNERS

City of Light kicked off the year in style for his sire, Quality Road, by winning the Pegasus World Cup Invitational by 5 3/4 lengths, continuing the momentum from his win in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile the previous fall. However, the Pegasus was the career finale for City of Light, as he immediately shipped to Lane’s End Farm in Kentucky to join his sire in time for the 2019 breeding season. There were still more than 11 months remaining in the racing season.
