ABEL TASMAN OUTSLUGS ELATE IN THE PERSONAL ENSIGN

STALLIONS

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.–It was deja vu all over again for champion Abel Tasman (Quality Road) and ‘TDN Rising Star’ Elate (Medaglia d’Oro) in the GI Personal Ensign S. at Saratoga Saturday. Last year, the pair battled down the Saratoga stretch in a thrilling renewal of the GI CCA Oaks with Abel Tasman besting Elate by a head and surviving an objection by Elate’s jockey Jose Ortiz. The Personal Ensign turned into a replay of the two talented fillies last meeting, objection and all, with the China Horse Club and Clearsky Farm’s Abel Tasman coming out on top yet again.

STALLIONS

Michael Lund Petersen’s Tale of the Union (c, 2, Union Rags–Tanglewood Tale, by Tale of the Cat) became the latest example of the incredible depth of the Bob Baffert barn Sunday as the $925,000 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic grad powered away to a convincing eight-length tally on debut at Del Mar, garnering the ‘TDN Rising Star’ distinction. Off a half-step slowly, the bay moved up in between rivals to pester speedy second timer Stubbins (Morning Line) through an opening quarter of :22.24.

ROAD COLT RUNS TO THE BUZZ AT DEL MAR; NAMED TDN RISING STAR

STALLIONS

Roadster (Quality Road), touted as the next potential superstar colt for a Bob Baffert barn that’s produced the likes Triple Crown winners American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile) and Justify (Scat Daddy) and the brilliant Arrogate (Unbridled’s Song) in recent years, took some time to be coaxed into the gate, and to get his feet underneath him once he broke out of it, but he ultimately lived up to the hype in a facile first victory. Off at 4-5 breaking from the rail, the roan was pushed along to move up and sit third behind splits of :22.05 and :46.20.

CATALINA CRUISER STAYS UNBEATEN IN SAN DIEGO

STALLIONS

When trainer John Sadler and Hronis Racing opted to scratch their other two entrants–including MGISW and defending champion Accelerate (Lookin At Lucky)–in Saturday’s GII San Diego H., that was probably a pretty good sign that they liked their chances with lightly raced Catalina Cruiser (Union Rags). A debut winner sprinting at Santa Anita last October, the $370,000 KEESEP yearling returned to the races a convincing optional claiming victor back over the same May 19, earning a solid 107 Beyer Speed Figure in the process.

QUALITY ROAD BRIDGING THE GAP

STALLIONS

By Chris McGrath – TDN 6/18/18

Here’s a Road that really is paved with good intentions. That, of course, is what they say about the one leading to hell–familiar, it might be said, to many who have tried to get a young stallion started. But Quality Road is taking his connections in entirely the opposite direction; to the breeding stratosphere, in fact.

She’d been sent down to Arcadia after her last afternoon appearance, and posted three easy breezes over this strip in the interim.
